Refuge has a manager for part of the year
The Refugi Joan Ventosa i Calvell is a mountain hut owned by the Hiking Society of Catalonia and located within the municipality of Vall de Boí (in the Alta Ribagorça region of Catalonia) on the shores of Estany Negre (‘Black Lake’) at an altitude of 2,214 metres. It stands at the foot of the Agulles de Travessani rock formation at the eastern end of the plateau of Pletiu de Estany Negre inside the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. The mountain hut started out as a private shelter for the executives of the CHADE company and friends of Joan Ventosa i Clavell. In 1965, it was transferred to the Hiking Society of Catalonia to be managed as a mountain hut open to the public. Later, in 1976, it was torn down and rebuilt. It was officially reopened on 13 October 1979. It currently has capacity for 69 people during the main season and for 8 people when unstaffed. It was named after its patron, Joan Ventosa i Calvell.
