At the end of the Pont d'Espagne (1460 m) parking area there is an information and service centre for visitors. The walk starts on the other side of this building, on a paved road that enters the forest. The first metres of the route are along the GR 10 long distance footpath, but we soon leave it to follow a sign to the right taking the track that crosses the river over a footbridge. This is a shortcut to avoid the bend in the road and after a few loops returning to it at Pont d'Espagne (1496 m) and the lodge (crossing route 04). To the right of the lodge the path curves round and leads upwards through the Marcadau valley. The road leads to Refugie du Clot (1522 m). In front of it there is a sign indicating Wallon along the left side of Gaba de Marcadau, following the old road.
However, we stay on the paved road and cross over to the other side of the bridge, following the right bank up the entire Plateau du Clot. Later on we pass by Lac du Paradis (1619 m) surrounded by forest before opening up onto the Pla du Cayan plain, where the paved road ends and becomes a wide dirt track. At the end of this meadow the track becomes a path and heads towards the south to enter the forest again. Several zigzags take us up a steeper hill before levelling off and leading up to Pont d'Estalounqué (1712 m). We cross the bridge and then continue on the left side heading in a south-easterly direction. There is no mistaking the path to follow, and after a fairly gentle upward slope we pass by Fontaine des Espagnols (1808 m) and reach a path crossing point (crossing with routes 18 and 20). The path to the left, crossing the nearby bridge, leads towards Arratille. To the right, the path leads us a short distance to Wallon-Marcadau refuge (1865 m), which marks the end of the route.
